Playing it Forward

During my corporate career I was fortunate to have some wonderful mentors.

As a coach I’m often asked what skills are needed going forward, and how to succeed in this constantly changing environment.

  • Learn to think on your feet and pivot. PowerPoint presentations will only take you so far.  You need to be able to respond, to speak without a PP deck, to connect with your audience. Take a class on improvisation and learn about “Yes, and….”
  • Gain a wide body of knowledge and experience. Become well versed in the arts, sports, current events, and other fields of work. You never know what’s around the corner so be ready by rounding out your knowledge
  • Make lasting connections. I have friends and business acquaintances from many years ago.  One of the biggest mistakes people make is “letting go” of their network when they become too busy.  Be there for your network and keep in contact.  Over the years you will help each other.
  • Push yourself to try things, which scare you. Doing what you are comfortable with won’t stretch you to reach for new horizons.  Fail and Learn.

“ Everything negative-pressure, challenges-is all an opportunity for me to rise.”  Kobe Bryant

  • Learn how to be creative. Take courses, watch TED talks, listen to podcasts and practice. Creativity is a key skill which you need.
  • Be aware of your Perceptions and Perspectives. There is always another way to look at things.  Succeed together. Lose-Win is a long gone strategy.
  • Laugh! Enjoy your life and use humour whenever you can…it’s the best tool you have.

Finally navigate by your Values.  They will be your beacon, your safeguard against losing yourself, and your template against which to measure decisions.  Trust your gut.  It’s never wrong.
